Buying in bulk is a great way to save time and money — and when buying in bulk, the freezer becomes your new best friend. Freezing foods (whether pre-cooked or not) can be a total game changer when it comes to meal prepping and budgeting your meals. However, it’s important to also be armed with knowledge, as there are some foods that you should avoid putting in the freezer. While some food items are a no brainer, others can be a little more tricky. We’ve made it easy for you, so check out which foods you shouldn’t toss into your freezer!

Cucumbers

While the actual freezing process of cucumbers isn’t the issue, thawing is where things become a bit more complicated. Post-defrost, cucumbers will lose their bite and become soggy and limp, which nobody wants in their salad.

Watermelon

Very similarly to cucumbers, watermelons are not a great fruit to fruit because of their high water content. While freezing them isn’t the problematic part, thawing will leave you with less than desirable results. The only exception is if you want to blend the watermelon into a healthy slushy!

Cooked Pasta

This one might be a little more ambiguous, but it’s really not a great idea to freeze pasta that’s been cooked. The reason is that the noodles will absorb the extra water that the pasta has frozen in. Once defrosted, the pasta will be shapeless, squishy, and completely unappetizing.

Fried Foods

There is one word that comes to mind when thinking of defrosted fried food: soggy! The wonderful crispiness of a fried coating will be completely lost once frozen and defrosted, leaving you with a soggy and mushy mess.

Eggs

Eggs and the freezer are not friends in any form, whether your eggs are cooked or raw. Raw eggs in the freezer can be especially dangerous because the inside will expand as it freezes, leaving a mess and the threat of bacterial growth.

Avocado

We know — avocados are notoriously difficult to catch while perfectly ripe. They’re either too hard or they’ve gone bad, so throwing it in the freezer might seem like a good way to freeze a perfectly ripe avo. But that’s not the case! Unless you want to use it in a smoothie, freezing an avocado will completely ruin its creamy texture.

Beer

There’s nothing worse than a flat and hazy beer, right? Well, placing beer in the freezer will speed up its aging and is like taking the highway to an unpleasantly flat beer. Keep it in the fridge where it belongs!

Celery

Since celery is one of the most water-dense vegetables out there, you can probably imagine why it’s not a great idea to keep it in the freezer. That’s right, unless you want to end up with soggy and limpy celery, keep it far away from the freezer.
